ERC starts electoral machinery in Banyoles without resolving Rufián role

Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya held a national council in Banyoles on Saturday to launch preparations for municipal elections in May 2027 and general elections due by 2027 at latest.

Secretary general Elisenda Alamany led the meeting before about 250 party members and municipal candidates. She stressed the need to win the battle of identity with progressive values against the rise of the extreme right. Alamany argued that Catalan identity rests on community, language and culture. She criticised both right-wing independentism and the PSC for their stances on Catalan identity. The council approved the rules for drawing up lists for Congress and the Senate. Gabriel Rufián’s request to choose his own colleagues directly was rejected, as territorial federations retain that power.

Gabriel Rufián of ERC and Irene Montero of Podemos proposed in Barcelona that ERC lead a left-wing coalition in Catalonia and Podemos elsewhere in Spain to avoid "dying separately" against the right. The event, moderated by Xavier Domènech, has sparked tensions within ERC and rejection from Sumar. Rufián urges his party to inspire the unification of Spain's left.

Oriol Junqueras, ERC president, has firmly rejected Gabriel Rufián's push for a left-wing electoral coalition, stating he did not go to jail for Catalonia so Ada Colau could run for ERC. At a book launch in Barcelona, he advocated understanding among democratic parties without electoral alliances. Parlament president Josep Rull called for updating Catalan identity to counter the far right.

Andalusia's Junta president, Juanma Moreno, announced Parliament's dissolution and regional elections for May 17, advancing the date initially set for June. The move follows a full four-year term, unseen in 14 years, aiming to boost turnout by avoiding events like the Pope's visit. PSOE candidate María Jesús Montero will leave her role as Spain's first deputy prime minister to focus on the campaign.

In the latest move amid Sumar's leadership transition following Yolanda Díaz's withdrawal, the party's executive will propose to its Grupo Coordinador an assembly after the Andalusian elections to renew organs and redefine its identity. The conclave is slated before the end of the political term.
