The Akal Takht has summoned Sikh ministers in the Punjab Cabinet and Sikh MLAs from all parties to appear on June 29. The move follows objections to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, which the Jathedars say was passed without consulting the Sikh Panth.
A five-member panel of Jathedars announced the decision at the Akal Takht on Monday. Akal Takht Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargajj said the Punjab government had ignored a resolution from an April 6 Panthic gathering that required approval from Sikh representative bodies before passing any law on Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
The Cabinet approved the Bill on April 11, the Assembly passed it on April 13, and it received the Governor’s assent. Gargajj stated that the legislation undermines the authority of traditional Panthic institutions.
Hindu ministers were asked to submit written replies, while all Sikh ministers and Sikh MLAs across parties must appear in person on June 29. The Akal Takht had previously issued a notice to Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan that received no response.
Gargajj stressed that religious directives on Sri Guru Granth Sahib must come from Sikh institutions, not the government.
