Amazon announced a software update for its Kindle Colorsoft and Scribe Colorsoft devices, introducing dark mode and enhanced drawing tools. The update allows users to toggle dark mode for specific menus, such as libraries or notebooks. It began rolling out on April 28, 2026.
Amazon revealed the update on April 28, bringing dark mode to the Kindle Colorsoft, including its Signature Edition with wireless charging and auto-adjusting front light, as well as the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Users can now customize settings per menu—for instance, keeping a library in dark mode while using a light notebook—addressing a long-requested feature on these color e-readers. Nighttime readers will benefit from the dimmer display that reduces light disturbance without sacrificing readability. Amazon also enhanced note-taking on the Scribe Colorsoft with Smart Shapes, offering pre-drawn lines, arrows, circles, triangles, and rectangles from the toolbar. A hold-to-snap tool lets users draw freehand shapes that automatically refine into tidy designs, aiding those adding graphics to journals. The update is deploying across devices over the next few days. There is also a Kindle Colorsoft Kids edition with themed covers and a year of Amazon Kids+ content, though it was not specified if it receives the update. The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, available in 32 GB, serves as both e-reader and digital notebook.
