Anna Ouyang Moench tapped as showrunner for Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2

Amazon Prime Video's Mr. and Mrs. Smith has named Anna Ouyang Moench as showrunner for its second season, succeeding co-creator Francesca Sloane. Moench, known for her work on Severance and Beef, will guide the series amid production delays. New leads Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher are set to star.

The appointment of Anna Ouyang Moench as showrunner marks a new chapter for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Amazon Prime Video series reimagining the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Co-created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, the first season debuted in February 2024 and earned 16 Emmy nominations, including for best drama series, best actor for Glover, and best actress for Maya Erskine. It won two Emmys: one for stunt coordination and another for guest actress Michaela Coel.

Sloane, who helmed season one, exited in September 2025 to join HBO under an overall deal that includes writing the third season of Big Little Lies. Production on season two, originally slated for fall 2025, was delayed indefinitely due to cast issues and Sloane's departure. Some scripts were already written before the pause. Glover remains involved creatively as an executive producer, ensuring continuity without major overhauls.

Moench, a writer and supervising producer on Apple TV+'s Severance and executive producer on Netflix's Beef season two, brings her expertise in character-driven stories blending drama, humor, and emotion. Her recent play, Your Local Theater Presents: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Again, sold out at La Jolla Playhouse in 2024. Peter Friedlander, global head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, praised her: "Anna is a phenomenal storyteller with an incredible ability to balance character-driven drama, sharp humor, and emotional depth. Her work on Beef and Severance speaks for itself, and we’re thrilled to have her at the helm of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Season Two."

Mark Eydelshteyn, from Anora, and Sophie Thatcher, from Yellowjackets, were cast as the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith in December 2024 and February 2025, respectively. None of the season one cast, including Glover and Erskine, are expected to return. With Moench aboard, producers New Regency and Amazon MGM Studios plan a spring-summer 2026 start in Los Angeles to secure a $22.4 million tax credit awarded in March 2025. It remains unclear if potential guest stars like Lily-Rose Depp or Wagner Moura will be re-approached. The series follows two strangers posing as a married spy couple, navigating missions and real emotions, ending season one in a cliffhanger gunfight.
