Assam couple booked for birthday celebration on bridge

Guwahati police have detained a couple for celebrating a birthday on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu bridge across the Brahmaputra River.

Personnel at the Bharalumukh police station detained Surajit Mandal and his wife Bijaya Mandal on June 24, 2026. The residents of Guwahati’s Fatashil Ambari area were held after a video of the event on the bridge went viral on social media. The video showed the couple with a few friends allegedly blocking a portion of the road and using electronic sparklers and firecrackers.

The couple was booked under Sections 285, 270, and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. An officer at the Bharalumukh police station said an SUV used during the celebration was seized. This incident occurred a day after 14 people were arrested for a similar midnight birthday celebration on the same bridge on June 21. Businessman Gautam Baruah and the 13 others were granted bail on June 24 after medical examinations and biometric verification.
