Basque Security Counselor Bingen Zupiria said on Sunday in Durango that he regrets the events that took place on Saturday at Bilbao airport. He noted that an agreement had been reached with the Ertzaintza, Aena and Flotilla representatives on how the welcome for the six activists landing around 2 p.m. should proceed.
Zupiria pointed out that provocations and pushes occurred in the terminal, preventing both the greeting for arrivals and the normal transit of other passengers. He assumed personal responsibility for the operation and announced an investigation into whether the officers' actions complied with current directives. Four people were detained for disobedience.
Amnesty International condemned the excessive use of force, stating that the images show no legitimate cause for beating with batons people already on the ground. Global Sumud Flotilla organizers expressed indignation and called for an international investigation.
