The BYU Cougars played their Sunday stroke-play round alone on Thursday morning at the NCAA golf national championship. The team received a religious exemption to avoid competing on the Sabbath. They finished the round at one under par before joining the rest of the field on Friday.
The NCAA golf national championship is being held at the Omni La Costa resort in Carlsbad, California. Rounds run from Friday, May 29 through Wednesday, June 3. The BYU Cougars, ranked 22nd, appealed for an exemption because their Mormon faith requires rest and worship on Sunday. The NCAA approved the request, allowing the team to complete the round early while other teams prepared for round one.
