Cabo primero Marcos Cosme remains in the ICU after being shot in the head during an operation in Valdivia to arrest a fugitive linked to the homicide of Eugenio Naín. Another officer is recovering favorably.
Two Carabineros were injured on Wednesday during an operation in the Punucapa sector of Valdivia to capture Carlos Esteban Cancino Tapia, alias “El Rana”, identified as the alleged material author of the 2020 murder of Cabo Segundo Eugenio Naín.
Cabo primero Marcos Cosme was shot in the skull and underwent emergency surgery. Vicente Schild, technical head of the Hospital Base de Valdivia, reported that he remains in the ICU with a reserved prognosis and in critical condition. Suboficial Roberto Canío, wounded in the abdomen, is stable and may be discharged soon.
Carabineros General Director Marcelo Araya visited the injured officers and stated that the institution will not back down in the pursuit of fugitives. President José Antonio Kast condemned the attack and ordered the Security Minister to travel to the area.
