Cathay Cargo has transported around 60 elite showjumping horses from Europe to Hong Kong ahead of the Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show. The airline used a chartered Boeing 747 freighter for the 12-hour journey from Belgium. This operation highlights Cathay's expertise in live animal logistics for high-stakes equestrian events.
Cathay Cargo successfully completed a complex logistics operation to bring approximately 60 elite showjumping horses from Liège, Belgium, to Hong Kong International Airport. The horses traveled aboard a chartered Boeing 747 freighter, benefiting from the aircraft's spacious main deck and temperature-controlled environment to ensure a calm and safe 12-hour journey. This transport supports the upcoming Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show, scheduled at AsiaWorld-Expo from January 30 to February 1, 2026.
The operation builds on the success of last year's event, marking the second year of partnership between Cathay Cargo and the organizers. Dominic Perret, Cathay Director Cargo, emphasized the responsibility involved: “Transporting these world-class equine athletes is both a privilege and a huge responsibility. We understand the pressure riders and owners face ahead of elite competition, which is why our role is to eliminate travel as a source of stress. Our expertise in live animal logistics has seen a year-on-year tonnage growth in this segment, and supporting this world-class event reinforces our position as the trusted partner for high-stakes animal transport.”
Cathay's Live Animal solution prioritizes welfare through three principles: creature comfort with IATA-compliant stalls for ventilation and safety; optimized routing to minimize stress; and CEIV Live Animals certification for high standards. On the ground, horses received priority handling and slow-speed tarmac transfers, while in-flight, certified crew monitored conditions, accompanied by professional grooms.
Jo Peck, Event Director at HPower International, praised the partnership: “For an international event like this, the stakes are incredibly high — there’s no margin for uncertainty when dealing with equine athletes. That’s why we’re pleased to partner with Cathay Cargo for the second year, as they combine meticulous care and understanding of horses with the discipline of a world-class cargo operation. It’s the assurance and peace of mind they provide that means the riders and organisers can focus on the show.”
As the first Asian carrier with IATA’s CEIV Live Animals certification, Cathay Cargo demonstrates leadership in handling high-value animal shipments, ensuring the equine athletes arrive competition-ready for one of Asia's premier equestrian events.
