A semi-truck hit vehicles at a prior crash scene at kilometer 68 on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway on Sunday, July 12, resulting in at least 10 deaths.
The crash happened when the semi-truck driver failed to stop and struck cars being attended by emergency services. Two National Guard officers were seriously injured.
Nayarit's Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection reported 10 deaths, while the National Emergency Commission reported 16. The number of missing persons remains undetermined.
The semi-truck operator was detained by the National Guard with support from staff at the Plan de Barrancas toll booth. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and follow official reports only.
