Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 92nd minute as Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in Los Angeles on June 28 to advance to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Canada dominated the first knockout-stage match for both teams but needed a dramatic stoppage-time strike from midfielder Stephen Eustaquio to secure victory at SoFi Stadium. Eustaquio chested down a loose ball and fired into the bottom corner after South Africa failed to clear a delivery.
The co-hosts created multiple chances earlier, including a header cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba and saves from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. A penalty appeal involving Richie Laryea was dismissed following a VAR review.
Eustaquio said after the match that he “felt everyone shoot with me” and credited the team’s belief. Canada will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the last 16 on July 4.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos said a decision on his future would come in the next few days but expressed pride in reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
