Daniel Serafini, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, was sentenced to life in prison after his conviction for murdering his father-in-law and attempting to kill his mother-in-law in a bid for their $11 million trust fund. The 2021 shooting in Tahoe City, California, left Robert Gary Spohr dead and Wendy Wood gravely wounded. Serafini expressed defiance in court, calling the trial a popularity contest.
Daniel Serafini, 51, who pitched for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs in the 1990s, faced financial difficulties after his career, including dwindling $14 million in earnings from failed investments and a bitter divorce. He owned a bar in Nevada and appeared on a 2015 episode of "Bar Rescue," where he discussed his $300,000 debt and feelings of disappointment.
In 2021, Serafini and Samantha Scott, a friend of his wife Erin Spohr, targeted Serafini's in-laws in Tahoe City, an unincorporated resort town on Lake Tahoe's western shore. Prosecutors stated that the motive was to access an $11 million trust fund connected to his wife's family. First responders arrived at the victims' home after a call from Wendy Wood, who was shot and later died by suicide a year after the attack. Robert Gary Spohr, 70, was found shot in the back of the head.
Surveillance videos captured a hooded man with a backpack near the residence hours before the shooting. Investigators identified Serafini and Scott as suspects. Scott, formerly a nanny for the family, pleaded guilty on February 6, 2025, to being an accessory to a felony.
Serafini was convicted in July of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and burglary following a six-week trial in Placer County. At sentencing, he declared, "There was no DNA, no photos, no video, to link me to this crime, but because you don't like me, you found me guilty. This trial was a popularity contest."
Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire emphasized the broader impact: "The human toll of this case extends far beyond the courtroom. The defendant's horrific crimes took the lives of a father, mother, loving grandparents, family members and friends... highlighting the lasting harm caused by deliberate violence."
Adrienne Spohr, daughter of the victims and sister of Erin, described Serafini as "true evil" and shared, "I'm left with the lasting image of my dad shot in the back of the head and my mom lying on her back bleeding out. Dan destroyed the lives of my parents and all four of their children." She filed a wrongful death lawsuit in June 2023 against Serafini, Scott, and Erin, accusing them of malicious conduct. After the sentencing, Adrienne said, "It's been four years of just hell. The Placer County District Attorney's Office and sheriff's office never gave up, and today finally justice was served."
