A fire broke out on Friday afternoon in an apartment at the Maison Radieuse in Rezé, Loire-Atlantique, an iconic building designed by Le Corbusier. Two people suffered light injuries, and some tenants were evacuated. Around 70 firefighters were mobilized to control the blaze.
The Maison Radieuse, located south of Nantes, is a major work by Swiss architect Le Corbusier, built between 1953 and 1955. It is the second of his five residential units (1887-1965). Surrounded by a six-hectare park, it houses 294 apartments, six internal streets, and a nursery school at the top, according to the Ministry of Culture.
On Friday late afternoon, a fire spread to the 7th and 8th floors of the building. Loire-Atlantique firefighters responded swiftly, using two hoses to contain the blaze. The toll includes two people with light injuries, with no further details on their condition.
Thirty vehicles and 70 firefighters were deployed to the scene. Authorities set up a reception center at Rezé town hall, in partnership with civil protection, for around 250 temporarily evacuated individuals. No additional information was provided on the fire's causes or material damage, but the response prevented a larger spread in this protected heritage site.
