Former Audiencia Nacional prosecutor Ignacio Gordillo dies at 75

Ignacio Gordillo, a prosecutor for three decades at Spain's Audiencia Nacional, died Monday in Madrid at age 75. His career was linked to cases against ETA and the GAL.

Gordillo, born in Madrid in 1950, joined the Audiencia Nacional in 1980 after serving in the courts of Girona and Valladolid. For thirty years he handled proceedings linked to ETA, GRAPO and GAL terrorism, as well as economic crimes.

After leaving the prosecutor's office in 2010, he worked in private practice. The Madrid Bar Association announced his death and noted his commitment to the rule of law.

In the Lasa y Zabala case, Gordillo prosecuted police officers involved in the 1983 kidnapping and murder of two ETA members. He stated he faced pressure from the government then led by Felipe González to halt the investigation.
