Epic Games has announced that Fortnite's original co-op mode, Save the World, will become free-to-play starting April 16, 2026. This change comes as the company addresses declining engagement in its flagship title. The move aims to attract both veterans and newcomers to the survival crafting experience.
Fortnite, which Epic Games describes as "the biggest game in the world," began as a co-op survival crafting game in Early Access, focusing on loot collection and defending against zombie waves. Following the explosive popularity of its battle royale mode in 2017, the original experience was rebranded as Save the World and remained a paid mode with occasional updates, while development resources primarily supported the battle royale and spin-off modes like Festival.
The free-to-play transition for Save the World, set for April 16, 2026, marks a strategic shift amid signs of waning interest in Fortnite after years of expansions, live events, and collaborations with major IPs. This follows Epic's announcement on March 10, 2026, of upcoming price adjustments to V-Bucks, the game's premium currency. Save the World will be accessible on all platforms supporting Fortnite, including the upcoming Switch 2, but excluding smartphones, tablets, and the original Nintendo Switch.
To encourage participation, Epic is offering rewards for registration milestones through the official site: a banner at 300,000 players, a spray at 700,000, and the Snowstrike Hero skin at 1 million. The mode retains its core elements of crafting and co-op play, which influenced the battle royale version, providing players a chance to explore Fortnite's roots without an upfront cost.
