Météo-France announced on Wednesday June 24 that France had experienced its hottest day on record. The national thermal indicator reached 30 °C, surpassing the previous day’s record. The heatwave continues across much of the country.
According to Météo-France, the national thermal indicator, the average of daytime and nighttime temperatures across 30 stations, reached 30 °C on Wednesday at 5 p.m. This figure erases the provisional record of 29.9 °C set on Tuesday June 23.
The heatwave, which began on June 17, has placed 72 departments under red alert on Thursday, affecting 51.1 million residents. Highs of 40 to 42 °C are expected this weekend across much of the country.
Power outages persist in Finistère, where around 15,000 households remain without electricity Wednesday evening. Three deaths “possibly” linked to the heatwave have been reported in Pas-de-Calais.
