Germany's national ice hockey team closed its preliminary round at the world championship in Switzerland with a 6:3 win over Great Britain. Quarterfinal entry now depends on a slip-up by Latvia.
Germany scored through Alexander Karachun in the 14th minute, Frederik Tiffels and Fabio Wagner within 16 seconds in the 20th minute, plus Andreas Eder, Joshua Samanski and Leon Gawanke. Coach Harold Kreis's team collected ten points in the group stage.
The win marked the third straight success against underdogs. Earlier the side had dropped points against Latvia, the United States, Finland and Switzerland. Germany reaches the knockout round only if Latvia loses to Hungary on Tuesday.
National team player Frederik Tiffels said after the match: “It was mixed today.” Coach Harold Kreis added: “Over 60 minutes we safely brought the win home.”
