The High Court has dismissed a petition against the Ksh4.4 billion Mau Mau Road project through Aberdare National Park. Justices ruled the petition lacked merit and environmental safeguards were sufficient.
Justices Lucy Gacheru, Bernard Eboso and James Olola dismissed the constitutional petition on 18 July 2026. They found no requirement for a Strategic Environmental Assessment report under 2024 law and no violation of Article 69(1) of the Constitution.
The Kenya National Highways Authority defended the 52-kilometre project, stating it complied with environmental laws and included public participation. Petitioners had sought to halt construction over threats to the forest and wildlife including the Mountain Bongo.
President William Ruto stated in May that the project was 60 per cent complete with Ksh2 billion allocated for completion within two years. The road, a Vision 2030 initiative started in 2009, connects Githunguri in Kiambu County to Njengu in Nyeri County.
