Hong Kong police arrested a 37-year-old man on Sunday after an online photo showed him riding a motorcycle with two passengers including a young child. The suspect faces charges for exceeding passenger limits and carrying a child under eight.
The traffic investigation unit of New Territories North carried out the arrest on Sunday morning. The suspect remains in police custody.
The photo shows three people on the motorcycle with the child positioned between two adults. All three wore helmets, though the one on the child appeared to be a bicycle helmet.
The force condemned the behaviour and reminded the public that carrying more than one passenger is illegal unless the vehicle has a sidecar. Carrying a child under eight on a motorcycle is also banned unless the child sits in a securely fastened seat inside a sidecar.
First-time offenders face a maximum fine of HK$5,000 and three months in jail, while repeat convictions can lead to a maximum fine of HK$10,000 and six months’ imprisonment.
