IG Kanja honours fallen officers in moving ceremony

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has pledged ongoing government support for families of officers killed in the line of duty. He made the assurance during the 7th annual commemorative service on December 4, 2025. The event at the National Police College in Embakasi paid tribute to the bravery of fallen heroes from the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service.

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, Inspector General Douglas Kanja led a solemn gathering at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus to honour officers who died serving Kenya. The 7th annual commemorative service for fallen heroes of the National Police Service and Kenya Prisons Service adopted the theme 'Honouring Their Sacrifice, Upholding Their Legacy'.

Kanja emphasised the vital role of these officers in maintaining national peace. 'Whose bravery safeguarded Kenya's peace and stability,' he stated in his tribute, highlighting their courage, dedication, and selflessness. He reaffirmed the government's push for the Police Veterans and Fallen Heroes Bill, aimed at recognising retired officers and improving welfare for families of those lost in duty.

The IG also thanked partners and SACCOs for their support in the event and broader officer welfare efforts. He assured grieving families of continued governmental backing.

Senior officials joined the ceremony, including Jacob Narengo, Principal Administrative Secretary for National Administration in the Ministry of Interior. Deputy Inspector Generals Eliud Lagat of the Kenya Police Service and Gilbert Masengeli of the Administration Police Service attended. John Onyango, deputy director of criminal investigations, represented the DCI director. Others present were Dr Amani Yuda Komora, chairperson of the National Police Service Commission; Patrick Aranduh, Commissioner General of Prisons; and Ahmed Issack Hassan, Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

The event underscored the collective commitment to preserving the legacy of those who protected the nation.
