Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir celebrated the feat on social media, calling it a "new history" for Indonesian futsal. "This is history! Indonesia's Futsal Team advances to the 2026 Asian Futsal Cup semifinals after defeating Vietnam 3-2," he wrote, highlighting the team's efforts under coach Hector Souto.
This success builds on the team's impressive run in 2025-2026, including wins in the AFF Futsal Cup 2024/2025, Four Nations Cup 2025, and SEA Games 2025. Consistent performances against strong Asian sides like Thailand, Japan, and Vietnam propelled their points surge in the latest FIFA Futsal World Ranking, released on February 5, 2026.
In the rankings, Indonesia holds 24th place globally with 1,190.97 points, placing them in the top six in Asia behind Iran (5th worldwide), Thailand (11th), Japan (13th), Vietnam (20th), and Uzbekistan (22nd). Globally, Brazil remains first with 1,674.04 points, followed by Portugal, Spain, and Argentina.
The achievement underscores the rapid progress of Indonesian futsal in Asia. However, the upcoming semifinal against Japan poses a tough challenge for a finals berth.
