Jackson Suber shot a five-under 65 to take the first-round lead at the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Dan Brown is one shot back after a 66.
Suber, a 26-year-old PGA Tour player making his first trip to Europe, played the back nine in five-under 31. He had never played links golf before his practice round on Monday and had just 27 holes under his belt before teeing off.
Brown, ranked 136th in the world, made six birdies en route to his 66. The 31-year-old Englishman, who has 10 tattoos and smokes during rounds, is chasing his first major title.
Bryson DeChambeau carded a 67 to sit two shots off the lead. Other notable scores included Robert MacIntyre and Cameron Young at 67 and Scottie Scheffler at 68.
Several major winners from 2026 sit over par, including Rory McIlroy with a 72.
