Vice President JD Vance addressed hundreds of sailors at Naval Air Station Oceana on July 1, promising that the Trump administration would not send troops into conflict without a clear mission.
Speaking during events marking the U.S. military's 250th anniversary, Vance told service members that they deserve a clearly defined objective and weapons to win.
He singled out Carrier Air Wing 8 for its role in Operation Epic Fury against Iran and said military and intelligence assessments show Iran's nuclear program is further from a bomb than at any point in the past 30 years.
Vance also defended ongoing negotiations with Iran in Doha, stating that talks are going well and that strength from the military enables diplomacy.
After the remarks he answered questions on the Supreme Court ruling on birthright citizenship, saying he believes Justice Amy Coney Barrett made a mistake in the 5-4 decision.
