Jönköping municipality offers Finnish-language teaching in preschool through a roaming preschool teacher. This is unusual among municipalities outside the Finnish administrative area.
Jönköping municipality has had a roaming Finnish teacher in preschools for about fifteen years. The model was introduced after a Finnish-language preschool department was closed due to too small a pupil base.
Hanneke Laakso started in the position nearly two years ago. She teaches in both preschools and schools.
– I think it is very interesting and fun. I like that I get to travel around and visit different preschools and schools, says Laakso.
Four children are currently participating in the teaching. The children come from different parts of the municipality and have varying linguistic backgrounds.
SVT Uutiset asked ten municipalities outside the administrative area. Only Jönköping stated that they offer Finnish in preschool. Linda Kukko, whose children have participated for several years, says it gives the children better opportunities in school.
