The incident occurred during a break in the Hershey Bears' American Hockey League game, where a team from the Central Penn Panthers youth program took the ice for what was intended as a light scrimmage. Instead, the children began shoving, kicking, and punching each other, as shown in videos recorded by spectators, including a father attending the game with his family for the first time.
The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association issued a statement on Facebook, describing the brawl as a staged fight that it did not sanction. The Hershey Bears organization distanced itself, stating, "What occurred... did not reflect the values of the sport or the standards we expect when young athletes are on the ice."
The Central Penn Panthers, based at the Regency Ice Rink in Lancaster, are conducting an investigation. Ray Ferry, owner of the youth ice hockey league, emphasized the need for a full understanding before any decisions. "The truth of all that happened and lead up to it and who decided to do this activity on the ice is critical to how I'm handling it," Ferry said. "No excuses, no spin and a need to protect the players and coaches, while holding them appropriately responsible based on the truth."
Ferry noted that while videos have fueled public judgments, they do not capture the complete context. He plans to conclude his review, including interviews with players, parents, and coaches, by Friday and address the matter then. The videos' virality has even caught national attention, with NBC Nightly News preparing a segment. Online comments vary widely, from expressions of disgust at the violence to others viewing it as entertaining.
