Louisiana babysitter charged after boy drowns in pool

A 37-year-old babysitter in Prairieville, Louisiana, has been charged with negligent homicide after a 3-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool while under her care.

Joann Johnson was operating an unlicensed in-home daycare on Roy Rogers Road when the incident occurred on May 18. Surveillance video showed two young children playing near the pool without safety equipment. Ian Perez fell into the water and remained unconscious for about 20 minutes before Johnson retrieved him. Deputies received a 911 call around 3:50 p.m. that day. First responders attempted resuscitation and airlifted the boy to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Donovan Jackson, a public information officer with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office, said the video showed the child struggling for several minutes followed by more than 20 minutes without supervision. Johnson turned herself in on Wednesday and was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail.
