A magnitude 5.2 earthquake centered in Guerrero was felt in parts of Mexico City on Friday, June 5. The seismic alert did not activate because the epicenter was more than 300 kilometers away and the magnitude did not exceed 6.0.
The National Seismological Service reported that the earthquake occurred at 14:55 hours with its epicenter 27 kilometers southwest of Ometepec, Guerrero. The preliminary magnitude of 5.6 was later adjusted to 5.2. The Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection explained that the alert did not activate due to the distance exceeding 300 kilometers from the capital and because it did not reach magnitude 6.0. Myriam Urzúa Venegas confirmed this decision on social media. Capital authorities, including Head of Government Clara Brugada, stated that security protocols were activated and no damage was reported in Mexico City. The Mexico City International Airport also operated normally after inspections.
