Michigan has elevated Mike Boynton to interim head coach for the 2026-27 season after Dusty May departed for the Dallas Mavericks job. The move aims to stabilize a roster that reached the top of college basketball last season.
Boynton, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant under May and coordinated the Wolverines' top-ranked defense, received the promotion Monday. He brings seven seasons of high-major head coaching experience from Oklahoma State.
The announcement triggers a 15-day window for Michigan players to enter the transfer portal, beginning five days after the news becomes official. Key returners include point guard Elliot Cadeau, who was named Most Outstanding Player in the Final Four, and rising sophomore guard Trey McKenney.
Michigan finished the 2025 NCAA Tournament as national champions and enters the offseason ranked No. 3 in the preseason Top 25. Boynton could earn a permanent role if he keeps the core intact.
May endorsed his former assistant at the Final Four, saying Boynton covers his blind spots and is just as prepared for the head job.
