Genoa midfielder Mikael Ellertsson has acknowledged his Indonesian lineage but cannot play for the Indonesian national team after having represented Iceland at senior level.
Mikael Ellertsson, the 24-year-old Serie A midfielder with Genoa, revealed the details in an interview with FIFA. He stated that his mother was adopted from Indonesia to Iceland as a baby and the family has maintained ties with relatives in Indonesia.
The player scored against Juventus and drew attention from Indonesian supporters. However, FIFA regulations on association switches close his eligibility after he represented Iceland in official matches.
Indonesia coach John Herdman will not call him up. PSSI still has other players of descent under consideration for naturalisation.
