Naomi Osaka has expressed her determination to play without regrets as she seeks a third Australian Open title. Ranked 16th in the world, she will face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the opening round. Drawing on her past victories, she aims to adopt a more aggressive style on court.
Naomi Osaka stated on January 16 that she intends to attack aggressively at the Australian Open in pursuit of a third title. The former world No. 1, who won the tournament in 2019 and 2021, has faced challenges with form, fitness, and consistency since her last Grand Slam victory five years ago. Yet, her run to the U.S. Open semifinals last year hinted at a return to her peak performance, despite her current 16th ranking.
"I just hope to be able to look back on this tournament however it ends and not have any regrets," Osaka said. Facing Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in her first-round match, she draws on fond memories of past triumphs while noting improvements in parts of her game. She expressed satisfaction with her early-season form, even after a loss to Maria Sakkari at the United Cup this month, which she attributed to illness.
"When I reflect on that match, I just think about how I couldn't breathe because I was coughing so much," the 28-year-old reflected. "Honestly, I just wanted to be more aggressive and kind of more assertive with my game. I feel like I think my defense is good now ... I just want to play more aggressively."
The Australian Open begins on Sunday. Osaka's shift toward bolder play could prove pivotal in her bid to reclaim the crown.
