Customers purchasing new Vizio televisions may need to sign in with Walmart accounts to access streaming features. A Walmart representative confirmed the requirement applies to select models. The policy follows Walmart's acquisition of Vizio in December 2024.
Walmart has confirmed that its online logins will be mandatory on select new Vizio OS televisions for users setting up and installing streaming apps, according to a statement provided to Ars Technica. The requirement affects streaming capabilities on certain upcoming models, though specifics on which televisions or operating system versions remain unclear. It is also unknown if existing Vizio TVs will face the same mandate. A Vizio representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter. Vizio launched its Quantum 4K TV in January, marking one of the first new models since Walmart's purchase of the manufacturer late last year. Industry observers viewed the acquisition as a strategy for Walmart to expand advertising reach through Vizio's customer base. PCMag TV expert Will Greenwald tested the Quantum 4K and reported needing to enable sharing of viewing information to activate streaming features, but no Walmart login was requested. He confirmed streaming still worked after disabling the sharing option. This development aligns with industry norms where televisions typically require manufacturer accounts—Samsung uses its own, Amazon Fire TVs need Amazon credentials, and Google TVs demand Google logins. Vizio televisions have required Vizio accounts since 2024, but mandating a retailer's login represents a novel step. Vizio remains a popular choice for budget buyers, frequently earning Editors' Choice recognition for its TVs and soundbars.
