A 33-year-old man from Raleigh has been arrested after posting videos on Facebook in which he threatened to kill President Donald Trump. Federal prosecutors filed charges following the online statements made in May and June.
Christopher Carnes allegedly posted multiple videos threatening the president, including one on May 13 stating "DJT I am going to kill you." In the posts, he referenced Operation Epic Fury and claimed to possess a pipe bomb that he said he would use against Trump.
Carnes turned himself in to police on June 10 and told officers he had explosive materials in his red Dodge Charger. A bomb squad later recovered an empty plastic PVC pipe and metal pin from the vehicle that matched items shown in his videos.
He faces two counts of perpetrating a hoax involving a purported explosive device. Prosecutors say additional charges related to threats against the president are expected.
Carnes is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary and detention hearing on June 22.
