Shohei Ohtani will miss his next scheduled start for the Los Angeles Dodgers because of left knee irritation.
The two-way player received a lubricant injection in the knee before the All-Star break. He had been expected to pitch Wednesday against the Phillies but still did not feel 100 percent after playing catch over the weekend.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday it would be some time before Ohtani returns to the mound. Roberts added that the issue is not day-to-day and the team is erring on the side of caution given its strong position in the standings.
Ohtani last pitched on July 3. He has continued to hit without pain and started Sunday's game as the designated hitter. Roberts expressed confidence that Ohtani will pitch again this season.
