OpenAI adds AI-generated pets to Codex app

OpenAI has introduced AI-generated pets as optional animated companions for its Codex coding app. These pets provide updates on Codex's tasks without interrupting the user's workflow. The feature is now available on Windows and macOS.

OpenAI launched AI-generated pets for Codex, its agentic tool designed to assist developers with coding. The pets act as floating overlays that inform users about Codex's ongoing work, notify them of task completions, or request input when needed. Developers can view Codex's active thread without switching apps, enhancing the coding experience with a playful element reminiscent of Microsoft's Clippy, though more useful, according to early feedback from users. Users summon or dismiss the companions by typing '/pet' in the app, with eight built-in options available. They can also generate custom pets using the '/hatch' command, such as a cute goblin. Early adopters have shared various creations, including Clippy-inspired versions. The feature is already live on both Windows and macOS versions of Codex. To promote user-generated pets, OpenAI is offering 30 days of ChatGPT Pro for 10 of their favorite companions during a limited-time promotion.
