On May 22, 2026, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that the Punjab government has issued directions for strict compliance with the Supreme Court’s May 19 order. He said stray dogs will be taken from busy public areas to allow children, senior citizens and families to move without fear.
The government plans to build and maintain dog shelters for proper care of the animals. Measures will follow the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and ABC Rules, including euthanasia only for rabid, incurably ill or aggressive dogs.
