The accident occurred on Sunday, December 7, 2025, around 11 a.m. in the Miasenyi area near Voi on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The Kinatwa Sacco PSV was traveling from Wote to Mombasa when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with an oncoming trailer. Photos show the front of the PSV severely damaged, while the trailer sustained minor damage, with both vehicles ending up off the road.

The chief medical officer at Moi County Referral Hospital in Voi, Dr. Swaleh Khamis, confirmed that the hospital received 11 injured individuals. 'Unfortunately, seven people were declared dead on arrival. Four are men and three are women. They have not yet been identified,' Dr. Khamis said. He added that two patients have been discharged, one male is under further observation, and a child with minor injuries is being monitored. The hospital is preparing for a potential increase in road accidents during the holiday season.

One survivor, Agnes Mutunga, who sustained injuries to her eye and leg, recounted the terrifying incident. 'We traveled overnight. I was half-asleep when I felt a sudden jolt followed by a loud explosion. I found myself injured, unable to speak or move. I thank God to be alive,' she said. She noted the driver was overtaking vehicles at high speed, which had made her uneasy.

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) blamed the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for failing to upgrade the road to a dual carriageway. 'Kinatwa heading to Mombasa Head-on Trailer. Several travellers have died. Three people were reported to have survived with serious injuries. We blame it on KeNHA's 20-year lack of making the highway dual,' MAK stated. Some injured passengers were trapped inside the vehicle for several minutes before rescue.
