The San Jose Sharks pulled off an improbable rally against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night, overcoming a 5-1 deficit in the third period to secure a 6-5 overtime victory at PPG Paints Arena.
San Jose trailed early after Tyler Toffoli opened the scoring at 10:27 of the first period with a shot from the point, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Sidney Crosby tied it 1-1 just eight seconds into a power play at 12:41, converting a rebound of Anthony Mantha's shot for his 19th goal of the season.
In the second period, Rutger McGroarty put Pittsburgh ahead 2-1 at 0:19 with a wrist shot from the high slot, marking his first point in six games. Kevin Hayes extended the lead to 3-1 at 9:42, tapping in a pass from Noel Acciari, and Bryan Rust made it 4-1 on a power-play one-timer assisted by Crosby at 19:53.
The Penguins pushed further ahead in the third when Mantha scored on the power play at 5:25, making it 5-1. But the Sharks responded with five unanswered goals. John Klingberg cut the deficit to 5-2 at 7:33 on a 5-on-3 power play wrist shot from the high slot. William Eklund pulled San Jose within 5-3 at 14:19, chipping in a loose puck after a diving save by Arturs Silovs.
With Askarov pulled for an extra attacker, Macklin Celebrini scored his 16th goal of the season at 17:32 to make it 5-4, and Toffoli tied the game at 5-5 with a wrist shot from above the crease at 18:22.
In overtime, Klingberg sealed the win at 2:57 with his second goal of the game, a one-timer from the bottom of the left face-off circle assisted by Celebrini.
Toffoli finished with two goals and two assists, Celebrini had a goal and two assists, Eklund added a goal and an assist, and Alexander Wennberg recorded three assists for the Sharks (16-14-3), who have won three of their last four. Yaroslav Askarov made 38 saves.
For Pittsburgh (14-8-8), Mantha and Rust each had a goal and two assists, Crosby tallied a goal and an assist, and Silovs stopped 26 shots. The Penguins are now 0-1-3 in their last four games.
Injuries marred the game for San Jose, as forward Philipp Kurashev left with an upper-body injury midway through the second after sliding into the end boards, and Will Smith exited at 3:30 of the third following a hit from Penguins defenseman Parker Wotherspoon.
