Shorthanded Stars rally to defeat Oilers in shootout

The Dallas Stars overcame a two-goal deficit and multiple injuries to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout at American Airlines Center. Mikko Rantanen scored twice, including his 300th career goal, while Miro Heiskanen tied the game in the third period. Wyatt Johnston provided three assists and the shootout winner to secure the victory.

The Dallas Stars extended their point streak to seven games with a resilient 4-3 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers, despite playing shorthanded due to injuries to key players including Roope Hintz, Matt Duchene, Radek Faksa, Jamie Benn, and starting goaltender Jake Oettinger, who served as backup after the birth of his child.

Edmonton took an early 2-0 lead just seven minutes into the game, marking the sixth time this season the Stars trailed by two goals. Dallas responded in the second period when Rantanen scored on the power play for his 300th career goal, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Oilers extended their advantage to 3-1 seven minutes into the third, but Rantanen struck again a minute later for his seventh goal of the season, making it 3-2.

Heiskanen then tied the game four minutes later by cleaning up a rebound off the end boards. The Stars, who have now gone beyond regulation in three straight games, controlled overtime with a 3-2 edge in shots but could not score. In the shootout, Nick Robertson and Johnston converted for Dallas, while Casey DeSmith made the necessary stops to clinch the win.

New coach Glen Gulutzan, facing his former team, praised the effort. "It was nice to get the extra point, and then to get it against them, it was even better," Gulutzan said. Johnston echoed the team's resilience: "We’ve always been a team with patience and a no-quit attitude. We believe we can come back in any game."

Rantanen highlighted Heiskanen's overtime performance against Edmonton's stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Stars improve to 7-3-3, while the Oilers fall to 6-5-4. Dallas relied on a lineup of 11 forwards and seven defensemen, with Heiskanen logging nearly 28 minutes and forwards like Rantanen, Johnston, Tyler Seguin, and Sam Steel playing over 23 minutes each.
