South Africa is mourning the deaths of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams and rugby prospect Luqobo Makwedini, both young athletes from the Western Cape.
Jayden Adams, 25, a midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, was found dead on Saturday morning at a property in Schotsche Kloof in Cape Town. Western Cape police have opened an inquest into the circumstances.
Adams had recently played in South Africa's three group matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie said the cause of his passing has not yet been confirmed and appealed for restraint from speculation.
Luqobo Makwedini, 20, a former SA Rugby U18 prop, died after falling ill at training with his French club Béziers Hérault. President Cyril Ramaphosa paid tribute to both athletes, noting the timing during ongoing international sports events.
