Spotify is testing a new tool called Artist Profile Protection to help artists verify releases on their profiles. The optional beta feature allows artists to review and approve tracks before they appear, combating fake or AI-generated content. It aims to ensure listeners access legitimate music from their favorite artists.
Spotify announced on Tuesday that it is testing Artist Profile Protection, a new feature designed to let artists preapprove releases before they appear on their profiles. Available in beta to a select group of artists, the tool is entirely optional. Artists who opt in can review each potential release and choose to accept or decline it. Once approved, the release authenticates as legitimate, appearing on the artist's profile and contributing to their catalog, stats, and recommendations, according to Spotify. This addresses issues where artists' music gets wrongly attached to profiles or unauthorized content, such as bogus AI-generated tracks, appears under their name. For listeners, it simplifies identifying genuine releases from known artists, reducing the risk of unknowingly streaming fakes. Artists who do not enable the feature will see releases go live on their profiles without preapproval, maintaining the current process. Spotify introduced this amid growing concerns over AI-generated music and digital fraud. Last year, the platform rolled out policies targeting AI deepfakes and identity theft to safeguard the music ecosystem. The company emphasized the tool's role in helping artists vouch for the accuracy of names, titles, and overall trustworthiness of releases.
