The Pittsburgh Steelers are giving Will Howard every chance to secure the backup quarterback role behind Aaron Rodgers following OTAs and minicamp.
Ray Fittipaldo reported that Rodgers remains the clear starter while Howard has been the consistent No. 2 during spring sessions. The team plans to continue that arrangement through training camp, with Howard needing to perform in preseason games to lock in the job.
Fittipaldo noted that the Steelers are looking for a potential future starter and want to evaluate Howard closely this summer. Mason Rudolph, who has more team tenure, appears to be the odd man out once again as the organization prioritizes long-term development.
Third-round rookie Drew Allar is viewed as a developmental prospect. Fittipaldo expects him to receive limited preseason snaps in what could be a redshirt year.
