On the evening of Wednesday, November 5, 2025, a supermoon will be visible over Sweden, described as the largest and brightest of the year. The phenomenon occurs when the full moon is closest to Earth and appears extra large. Visibility varies by region due to weather conditions.
The supermoon occurs when the full moon is closest to Earth, making it appear extra large and bright. It happens about three times a year, and this year in October, November, and December. Tonight's supermoon is the second of the year and the largest overall.
”Tonight's supermoon is actually the largest and most luminous of the year”, says Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Klart. The moon can appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than the year's weakest full moon, but the effect is largely psychological, according to Eric Stempels, astronomer at Uppsala University.
”It is very much a psychological effect”, Stempels says. He explains that the moon's orbit around Earth is elliptical, causing the distance to vary by about ten percent. ”If you're lucky with clear skies, you can experience a really beautiful moon”, he adds.
Visibility is best in southern and central Norrland, such as Ångermanland and Västerbotten. In southern Sweden, for example Gothenburg, chances are lower due to cloudy weather and rain. ”It's cloudy weather and we have this rain moving in from the west in streaks. As for Wednesday evening, it's not much to cheer about”, says Hilda Westberg, meteorologist at SMHI, to GP.
In Skåne, it clears up toward the night. ”Around eleven-twelve, we get fairly clear weather, but there might be veil clouds left. You will be able to see the moon, but not as if it were clear weather”, says Toni Fuentes, duty meteorologist at SMHI, to Sydsvenskan.
If you miss this one, the next chance is on December 4.
