Tamil Nadu is finalizing an intellectual property rights policy that emphasizes geographical indications. The move supports the state's goal of a 1.5 trillion dollar economy by 2036. Officials shared details at a recent summit in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu is in the final stages of formulating its intellectual property rights policy, which will cover geographical indications. S. Vincent, member secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, said the policy aims to strengthen protection, promotion and commercialisation of the state's intellectual property assets.
During the financial year 2025-26, the state filed 43 geographical indication registration applications. Of these, 11 came from the Patent Information Centre under the council. Tamil Nadu has already secured geographical indication tags for around 69 products.
The announcements came at the National GI Summit held at the IIT-Madras campus. The event was organised by the Technology Transfer Office at IIT-Madras in association with the Geographical Indications Registry Office.
