Taylor Sheridan has shared details about being pressured by HBO to remove Robert Redford from the lead role in Yellowstone. The creator had secured Redford's agreement to play John Dutton before the network clarified its preference for a similar but younger actor.
The series was originally in development at HBO. Sheridan pitched the project with Kevin Costner attached but executives insisted the part required a generational talent like Redford.
Sheridan traveled to Sundance and obtained Redford's commitment. When he informed HBO, the network expressed concern over Redford's age in his seventies or early eighties and stated it wanted only a comparable performer.
Sheridan later had to inform Redford of the change. Kevin Costner ultimately portrayed John Dutton when Paramount greenlit the series in 2017.
Redford died in September 2025. Sheridan dedicated the pilot episode of his 2026 series The Madison to the late actor.
