Tennessee man convicted of stabbing pregnant ex-girlfriend

Deandre Wilkins, 36, was convicted of aggravated assault after stabbing his pregnant ex-girlfriend 10 times in Memphis, Tennessee. The Shelby County District Attorney's Office announced the conviction on Monday, with sentencing set for May 1. Wilkins faces up to 15 years in prison.

Deandre Wilkins walked up to his ex-girlfriend in a parking lot on the 1500 block of Havana Street around 8:40 p.m. on September 20, 2024, punched her in the face, and then stabbed her repeatedly with a kitchen knife, the criminal complaint states. While attacking, he said, 'I told you I was going to get you.' The woman, who was pregnant with his child and had dated him for about a year before breaking up months earlier, survived after paramedics rushed her to a hospital. She identified Wilkins in a photo lineup provided by Memphis police. Wilkins was originally arrested on charges of attempted murder and domestic assault, but a grand jury indicted him on aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping. He was acquitted of the kidnapping charge. This stabbing was the third alleged assault on the woman in three months. On July 24, 2024, Wilkins punched her three or four times and stole her purse, though she did not report it immediately. On August 5, 2024, he held her and her four children captive in their apartment, punched her in the mouth, threatened to kill her if she tried to leave, and picked up a kettlebell weight, saying, 'I will smash your face in if you try to leave.' Police arrested him then on aggravated assault, domestic violence, and four counts of false imprisonment, later adding robbery and domestic violence charges. Wilkins posted $60,000 bond but failed to appear in court on August 20, 2024, prompting a bench warrant. He has remained in Shelby County Jail since the stabbing arrest. Prosecutors note prior convictions for aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, aggravated robbery, and burglary; he was on probation per the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
