Texas man receives life sentence for girlfriend's murder

A Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting his girlfriend as she slept in her San Marcos apartment. Juan Manuel Yanez, 49, pleaded guilty to the murder of 43-year-old Victoria Valadez earlier this month.

Yanez called 911 on February 7, 2025, to report that he had shot his wife. Authorities traced the call to an apartment on River Road in San Marcos, about 30 minutes south of Austin, where officers found Valadez with a gunshot wound to the head. Evidence indicated she was killed while sleeping, with no signs of a struggle.
