The Theater der Welt festival has begun in Chemnitz and runs for 18 days until July 5. The opening featured a German premiere along with other international productions.
The Theater der Welt festival, held every three years, opened at the opera house in Chemnitz. Canadian artist Tanya Tagaq presented her production Split Tooth: Saputjiji, which combines Inuit throat singing with motifs from her novel.
More than 30 productions from various countries will be shown in the city. These include a piece about anti-apartheid activist Simon Nkoli and a Czech staging on Ukrainian history. A children's project from Australia created a paper forest.
Yvonne Büdenhölzer of the International Theatre Institute stressed the value of polyphony and dialogue. Mayor Sven Schulze and director Christoph Dittrich expect many international visitors to give the city a metropolitan feel.
