Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Trai Essex believes Nick Herbig could develop into one of the NFL's top pass rushers. Essex made the comments during a recent podcast appearance. Herbig recently signed a four-year extension worth up to $100 million with the team.
Essex highlighted Herbig's playmaking ability despite limited snaps as a backup. He noted that the 24-year-old edge rusher's production, when adjusted for playing time, aligns with elite performers at the position. Herbig has recorded 16 sacks and nine forced fumbles in his career with just 11 starts. He has spent most of his time behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Essex spoke on his Snap Count podcast on Tuesday. He acknowledged Herbig lacks the resume of some higher-paid players but sees strong upside. The Steelers have a track record of developing edge rushers, including Watt. Herbig may see increased snaps this season due to his new contract.
