Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan releases in theatres

Jana Nayagan, the political action drama starring Tamil superstar Vijay, released in theatres across India on July 23 after overcoming certification delays and an online leak.

Directed by H Vinoth, the film features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain. It opened on nearly 2,500 screens, with advance bookings exceeding Rs 10 crore in India and Rs 1 crore in the UK.

The Central Board of Film Certification required about 20 seconds of cuts and muting of certain references before clearance. An online leak on April 9 reportedly drew 1.2 crore views, according to Chennai Police submissions to the Madras High Court.

Fans in Chennai celebrated with videos showing them pouring milk on Vijay cut-outs and dancing outside theatres. Two other Tamil films postponed their releases to avoid clashing with Jana Nayagan.

Vijay took oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister earlier this year after his party's election win. The UK release is scheduled for July 24 in uncut form.
