Violet Grohl, the 19-year-old daughter of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, has announced her debut album, Be Sweet to Me, set for release on May 29 via Republic Records, Island EMI, and Auroura Records. The album is previewed by the single '595', now accompanied by a music video directed by Nikki Milan Houston, following prior releases including 'THUM', 'Applefish', and 'What’s Heaven Without You'. It draws inspiration from late 1980s and early 1990s alternative music, as well as filmmaker David Lynch.
Violet Grohl signed with Republic Records and Island EMI last January and recorded her debut full-length album, Be Sweet to Me, from late 2024 into early 2025 at producer Justin Raisen’s Los Angeles home studio. The sessions featured musicians assembled in the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s Wrecking Crew session players, with Raisen known for work with Charli XCX and Sky Ferreira.
The album reflects influences from alternative acts like Pixies, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, and the Breeders, alongside horror movies, new wave, trip hop, Scandinavian black metal, vocal jazz, and 1970s acoustic folk. Grohl, a longtime admirer of the era due to her father's involvement, stated: "There’s something so powerful about that period of music, from the messaging to the visuals, it’s authentic and raw. I’ve listened to that stuff since I was a kid."
Prior singles include 'THUM' (September 2024), 'Applefish' (December 2024), and 'What’s Heaven Without You' (January 2025), the latter written after the Altadena fires and in memory of David Lynch, coinciding with his birthday on January 20. It was created with collaborators Persia Numan and Justin Raisen. A Record Store Day 7-inch single featuring 'What’s Heaven Without You' backed by 'Swallowtail' is set for April 18.
The latest single '595', inspired by a vintage phone sex line T-shirt with lyrics like “I’ll be your 1-900-G spot, baby/ 595 I’m on the line/ You won’t last,” is out now with a video by Nikki Milan Houston. Grohl has performed with her father, including a 2021 cover of X’s 'Nausea' and tributes to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Music runs deep in her family, connecting her to her paternal grandparents who played flute and sang locally. At age 12, Grohl said, "it clicked for me that I love watching other people make music, and maybe I could too," turning poetry and painful experiences into art.
